Museum
of
Fabrics
and
museum
of
decorative
Arts
The
fabric
museum
is
closely associated
with
the history
of
silk and his
successor
to
the old museum
of
Art and Industry
which
was created
by
the Lyon
Chamber of commerce
in
1864. Since
1946, it has
been
housed in the
18th
century Hotel
de Villeroy.
The
visitor can trace
the
development of weaving
and
textile décor,
with
pride
of
place naturally
given
to
the Lyon
silk
industry
between
the
17th and 20th
centuries
and
its various
uses
; high
quality
interior
decoration
and
clothing. The decorative
Arts
museum
was
opened to the
public
in
1925 and is
designed
to
complement the neighbouring
Fabric
Museum.
The
Museum is housed
in
the hotel
Lacroix-Laval
and
displays the use
of
textiles and tapestries
in
a XVIIth
and
XVIIIth century
interior
setting.

The
Museum
of Contemporary
Art:
In
1983, the
city of
Lyon decided
to create
a specialized
department
in charge
of forming
a collection
of contemporary
art within
the Fine
Arts Museum,
with its
own program
of exhibitions
and responsible
for the
organization
of the "Octobre
des Arts" Show,
replaced
in 1991
by the
Biennial
Exhibition
of Contemporary
Art. In
1988, the
Museums
of France
administrative
agency
conferred
the title
of Museum
of Contemporary
Art. On
December
19, 1995,
the Museum
of Contemporary
Art inaugurated
its new
building
at the
Cité Internationale
and welcomed
130,000
visitors
during
the 3rd
edition
of the
two-month
long Biennial
Exhibition.
